Alumni Spotlight: Kade Williams

University of Northern Iowa Alumni of 2020

The most valuable part of my experience as a Bright Scholar was forming friendships with other scholarship recipients and understanding their stories.

Current position (if employed): eCommerce Content Associate at Hy-Vee

Current city: Ankeny, Iowa

How did the Bright/Lois Dale Scholarship benefit you throughout college and after?

The main benefit of the scholarship was not having to pay for college. I was able to experience things I would not have otherwise been able to due to money constraints.

I continue to benefit from the scholarship since I have graduated by giving back to people in need and to my parents. My parents helped me so much when I was growing up, and it’s always been my priority to give back to them after graduation.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for the Bright Scholarship/Lois Dale Scholarship?

Apply for the scholarship if you fit the requirements. This scholarship is very helpful for those in need. You will build great bonds, both with other scholarship recipients and with members of the foundation.

What was your experience interviewing for your first job? Do you have any tips to share?

I was definitely nervous, but who isn’t during their first interview? I would say just be yourself, answer the questions truthfully and everything will be okay. You will find the right job.

Where are you now in your career? Where do you see yourself in five years? 10 years?

I am currently happy working at Hy-Vee. I see myself working my way up and sticking with the company for many years. I’m very happy with where I am at right now.

What is your best piece of advice for an incoming college freshman? What is your best piece of advice for a graduating college student?

For incoming freshmen, time management is the key to success your first year. If you can master time management, you’ll have a much easier time in college.  For graduating students, don’t take a job you’re not interested in. The right job is worth waiting for.

Who is your biggest inspiration and why?

My parents have always been my biggest inspiration. They own their own business and have always inspired me to follow my passions and do what makes me happy.
