Scholar Spotlight: Austin Heidbreder

Junior at University of Northern Iowa

I’m very excited to do as much chemistry research as possible as I prepare to attend graduate school and continue studying chemistry.”

What is your favorite class and why?

My favorite class so far has been descriptive inorganic chemistry because it was advanced enough to be challenging, and it answered a lot of why” questions that other chemistry classes had not gotten into.

What advice would you give to an incoming freshman?

Everyone says to explore groups and clubs, and they’re right. It’s the best way to meet friends and people like you. Don’t be afraid to be sociable.

Where do you see yourself in five years? 10 years?

After I complete my Ph.D., I see myself doing chemistry research in areas I’m interested in.

What do like most about your school?

UNI is the perfect size. It’s small enough to be personal and big enough to have many opportunities.

What’s a fun fact we should know about you?

I’ve been learning to play guitar for the last two years, which has been a lot of fun.
